The Latest in Compliance Engineering Products and Services

BPL Testing and Services

On-site product testing, consultation, and other services are offered for companies developing broadband over power line (BPL) technologies. The company provides EMC testing as well as development of testing methodology. In addition, the company can act as a representative to FCC for product approval. BPL technology enables high-speed data to move across existing power lines. FCC recently issued a Notice of Inquiry to seek comments on the compatibility of the technology. ESD Clip

An ESD clip electrically connects a wire shelf to a shelf post to reduce the ESD risks caused by ungrounded shelving. The clips install without tools in about 5 seconds to fully assembled and loaded shelving. They also provide a visual indication that the shelves are grounded. The ESD Clip fits most Metro Super Erecta, Super Adjustable, and other compatible shelving. One or more clips can be installed per shelf. A common ground, such as metal feet, a grounding chain, ESD wheels, or other suitable method, can be used for the entire unit. Surface-Mount Inductor

Self-leaded, flat-wire surface-mount DR356-series inductors offer cost and space efficiency in dc-dc convertor and switching power supply applications and accommodate pick-and-place manufacturing equipment. Providing high-performance filtering, the low-profile components handle high levels of dc current. They feature an inductance range of 580 nH–2.3 µH (±20%), rated current from 22 to 12 A, and dc resistance value of 1.45–4.3 (W). Inductors in the DR356-1 series have a maximum height of 0.185 in. and a 0.50-in. footprint, while the largest DR356-2-series inductor, having the same footprint, is 0.197 in. high. The devices are made from UL 94V-0–rated materials and operate between –40° and 105°C. Surge Protector

A quick-connect surge protector for 66-block multiple-line systems features an easily seen LED indicator that facilitates troubleshooting by going out when the protector has blown. Owing to its economical single-pair configuration and availability in five service voltages between 30 and 130 V, the 3.25 X 1.60 X 0.38-in., 14-g SNAP LiTE can accommodate a variety of telecom, voice data, and twisted-pair video applications on one 66-block. The easy-to-install snap-in surge protector can sustain thousands of small surges; when it is sacrificed in a large event, substitution of a new device is effected quickly. The protector allows a continuous current of 150 mA maximum and offers tip-to-ground and ring-to-ground protection. All models feature sneak current protection and guard against overamperage and overvoltage. Ditek Corp., Largo, FL; tel: 800-753-2345; fax: 727-812-5001; Internet: http://www.ditekcorp.com.

Resettable Fuses

A line of 250-V overcurrent protection products is designed to shield telecom networks from hazards originating with lightning strikes and contact with ac power lines. Multifuse MF-R/250 and MF-RX/250 resettable fuses come in a wide range of operating currents with Ihold values of 80–180 mA and initial resistance values of 0.8–22 W. They are available epoxy coated for higher insulation, uncoated for faster tripping, and in narrow and binned resistance ranges for line balancing. The fuses are part of an extensive line of telecom circuit-protection components. Bourns Inc., Riverside, CA; tel: 909-781-5500; fax: 909-781-5006; Internet: http://www.bourns.com.

Microwave Switching Platform

A modular platform for high-performance configurable, terminated microwave switching applications accepts up to four microwave switch plug-ins in a dual-slot module. The 1260-64M VXI module eliminates the need to acquire separate C-size cards for each type of microwave switch a system requires. Designed to switch signals in cellular, PCS, and satcom communication systems, the microwave platform is well suited for ATE systems for testing military equipment. Various microwave relays, from dc to 480 GHz, are available and can be accommodated on the switch card. Configuring the switch with a dc relay driver makes possible low frequency and power switching, as well as microwave switching. Relays can be replaced in under 5 minutes without removing the module from the VXI system. Racal Instruments Inc., Irvine, CA; tel: 949-859-8999; fax: 949-859-7139; Internet: http://www.racalinst.com.

Modular Jack

A modular jack for telecom and local-area network applications features integrated yellow and green LEDs that facilitate recognition of transmit/receive and line status, respectively. The right-angle PCB-mount RJ45 jack is fully shielded and includes enhanced top and side grounding tabs for good conductivity, panel grounding, and EMI/RFI protection. Snap-in board-retention tabs provide additional postsoldering stability. The LEDs are positioned at the top of the connector for good visibility. The jack is made of black nylon 46 for compatibility with wave and reflow soldering, and the contact material is nickel-plated phosphor bronze selectively plated with gold on the contact area and tin-lead on the solder tails. Kycon Inc., San Jose, CA; tel: 408-494-0330; fax: 408-494-0325.

EMC Compliance Software

EMITest for TestStand is an all-in-one software package designed to optimize EMI/EMC precompliance testing automation. Created within LabView 6.1, the software is designed for accuracy, versatility, consistency, and convenience. To ensure accuracy, the program is configured to partition a frequency range into sections to ensure that data points are not truncated due to resolution limitations of the measurement receiver. Preselected transducer correction factors can also be inserted. All aspects of a test, including equipment used, product specifications, and notes on the setup and product configuration, can be saved to ensure consistency. The software itself is stable; variation from test to test is under 0.5 dB. Key features include user-determined frequency ranges and specification limits, storage of antenna and cable factors for recall, and testing capability from 10 kHz to 40 GHz. National Instruments, Austin, TX; tel: 800-891-2755; Internet: http://www.ni.com.

EMI/RFI Shielding

In addition to featuring a complete line of standard and custom EMI/RFI shielding products, a manufacturer's catalog highlights metallized fabric gaskets and new track-mounting options for finger stock. The 52-page catalog includes technical drawings and compression values for all beryllium copper finger-stock profiles, and it illustrates the clip-on, snap-on, stick-on, hook and stick-on, track-mounting, and special installation styles available. Also presented is information on knitted-mesh shielding, elastomeric gasket materials, fan vents, filters, honeycomb vents, and Twinseal and Trimshield gaskets. The user-friendly product guide contains material specifications, information about attenuation and managing compression, and a compatibility chart. Power-Line Filters

Protection from conducted electronic noise is provided for three-phase applications from 100 to 300 A by a line of power-line EMI filters. Available in four models with nominal current ratings of 100, 150, 200, and 300 A, the small-footprint, high-performance FL-series filters fulfill the requirements of inverters, variable-speed motor drives, RF generators, and uninterruptible power supplies. System features include an integrated coil design and very good attenuation. Minimum insertion loss in a 50-(W) circuit at, for example, 1.0 MHz is 58 dB in common mode and 62 dB in differential mode. Rated voltage is 480 V ac maximum, 50/60 Hz, and the hipot rating for 1 minute is 2000 V ac line to ground and 2800 V dc line to line.
